The Iconic Game at 20 – The Plastic Guitar That United the Gap Between Music Fans

Marking two decades after Guitar Hero hit the market across the Atlantic, offering everyday gamers the means to become rock legends. Not in reality, but try convincing anyone who has nailed the epic four-minute guitar solo in front of an enthusiastic living-room audience.

Created by Harmonix, the game provided users with a plastic guitar peripheral to match on-screen cues scrolling down the screen synchronized to the music. Every sequence mimicked particular chords, producing the feel of an authentic performance.

The studio had already experimented with rhythm games prior to teaming up with RedOctane, later purchased by Activision in 2006. Together, they laid the foundations for an unlikely massively profitable series that had a remarkable impact on numerous musicians included, introducing classic bands to millions of gaming enthusiasts.

Michael Dornbrook, former COO from the developer, remembers the early financial challenges of licensing the songs – even though initial releases mostly used cover versions.

“We rerecorded every song because the dollar figure was so high,” he explains. “Despite having the necessary permissions by themselves, it proved extremely difficult. We failed to secure acts such as the Who – the publisher was operating on a shoestring budget, and our team was fairly certain the project would flop. However, when the game became a hit, and record sales airtime increased, everyone wanted to participate.”

He continues: “Among the remarkable aspects was how many parents got in touch and thanked us for introducing their kids to the songs they loved. It became an intergenerational phenomenon.”

Classic Rock Gains a New Audience

Irish group one featured act included their track on the 2008 game Guitar Hero World Tour. Guitarist the artist recalls the way the game brought older hits back into vogue: “The game provided a bigger, new demographic. Typically this had been seen as outdated material, but then when it was included in the game young people discovered it, suddenly it became trendy. That legitimised the genre, eliminating the outdated tag. It provided our catalog a new life.”

In 2008, the band's debut album remained unreleased stateside, meaning the game served as a primary platform for exposure for the group as they went on a North American tour opening for AC/DC. “The roadies had on the song on the tour bus, and several knew us thanks to the game,” he notes.

Major Band Spin-offs and Lasting Impact

Music's biggest acts quickly took advantage of the series’ popularity, including bands like Aerosmith, Metallica and Van Halen featuring in dedicated game editions centered around each band’s catalogue and associated lore, imagery and rock’n’roll mythology. In the case of, the Aerosmith edition, reportedly to have made the group greater revenue than any of their studio albums. It moved well over half a million copies in its first week, and demand for Aerosmith’s music rose significantly during an era when the music business faced decline.

Guitar Hero continues to inspire nimble-fingered fanaticism among its fans. Recently, an online personality completed an impressive attempt featuring the challenging track – an infamously tough power-metal song made popular by Guitar Hero – on Clone Hero, a freeware game with almost identical mechanics but an array of customisation options. The song is challenging even in the hardest setting, let alone played at double speed while hitting a single one of the thousands of cues. The streamer stated requiring nine months of practice.

“Guitar Hero offers a, fantasy thing. Just as with other games, that doesn’t mean you ought to pick up actual weapons and enlist,” notes DragonForce guitarist Herman Li.

The band previously completed a profitable run before Through the Fire and Flames was featured in the third game, yet he explains it made them a household name. “I recall the record label calling to tell me that we were selling albums rapidly,” he says. “It exploded on the subsequent tour, and we were playing right ahead of top acts at the event.”

Indeed, the band's visibility via the game was so immense that it risked eclipsing everything else accomplishments. Last year, the track featured in promotional material for Despicable Me 4. “In the past I thought otherwise, but now I accept it,” Li says. “Should you just hear a single track, that's fine – each person has their own musical journey and I'm pleased we played a role of people’s lives”.

Enduring Legacy from the Iconic Controller

Top-tier promotion, whether it’s for cars, apparel or video games, goes further mere transactions – it evokes a longing. Did Guitar Hero harness this? “Precisely what our team trying to create,” Dornbrook says. “The excitement of performing as a rock star on the stage. Since the beginning, the co-founders believed there’s an instinctive urge to make music, and their goal was to use technology to allow people to do it”.

The majority of Guitar Hero games were released in just a five-year period from 2005 to 2010, including derivative titles such as the DJ version, complete with a spinning deck, and the band-focused game. After that, the publisher’s interest on peripherals waned, except for a brief comeback in 2015.

Games like the fan project and newer releases have kept the community active, and there’s set to be something from the original publisher on the way. Recently formed developers has entered work on their first music game. Original co-founders are participating in advisory roles. Is the world prepared to welcome a new entry following Guitar Hero?

“Our team believed such titles might become similar to sports games allowing annual releases,” Dornbrook says. “There’s so much fresh tracks that it could be evergreen, so I’ve always been optimistic. There’s no reason for it to persist with new generations.”
